Gay GOP group hesitantly backs Romney

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A prominent gay Republican group offered Mitt Romney its "qualified endorsement" on Tuesday, calling it the right decision for the nation even as it slammed Romney's opposition to gay marriage.

Rather than offer the Republican presidential nominee its full support, Log Cabin Republicans said it will focus its efforts instead on Republican candidates for House and Senate who favor equality for gays and lesbians.

"If LGBT issues are a voter's highest or only priority, then Gov. Romney may not be that voter's choice," the group said in its endorsement, adding that its members value a diverse set of issues. "We believe Gov. Romney will make cutting spending and job creation his priorities, and, as his record as governor of Massachusetts suggests, will not waste his precious time in office with legislative attacks on LGBT Americans."

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email that the candidate welcomes the endorsement and appreciates the group's support.

A lengthy explanation released by Log Cabin Republicans under the banner "We Are Americans First" was part endorsement, part rebuke to a Republican Party whose standard-bearers the group said "appear to be caught up in an outdated culture war." The group argued that Americans of all sexual orientations have suffered financially under President Barack Obama, and while Romney may not share all of their views, he could be worse.

"Mitt Romney is not Rick Santorum, and Paul Ryan is not Michele Bachmann. Otherwise, our decision would have been different," the group said.

Even so, Log Cabin Republicans, a vocal and long-time critic of Romney's opposition to gay marriage and civil unions, said it would continue fighting a federal amendment banning gay marriage, which Romney supports, and condemned "the aspects of the GOP platform which work to exclude our families."

Stonewall Democrats, a national gay group backing Obama, called the decision by Log Cabin Republicans shameful and insulting. "This is politics at its worst ? when a community sells out its own people for the gain of a few individuals," Jerame Davis, the group's executive director, said in a statement.

The last-minute endorsement by the Republican group reflected persistent tensions among gay conservatives about what role to play within a party still largely opposed to many of the broader gay community's priorities. Another gay Republican group, GOProud, in June said it would "enthusiastically endorse" Romney and pledged to "commit significant resources" to electing him.

Sucky Adult Thing #1343: Planning for Retirement

Mann RetirementYes. You did come to the right blog today. No poop or sleep posts. Today I want to talk about something we don?t really want to talk about?planning for retirement. I just saw you shudder?it?s ok. It isn?t thrilling but ya know, it is a?necessity. Working mom or not, it is still looming down the road. With my generation still tunneling out from student loans( 20,000 is the average), it is hard to think about saving MORE money but you really have to.

?On average, each of us spends 83,000 hours working ? and less than 10 hours planning for retirement. ? -??Harvard Human Resources

Yes. I am 30 but as I stated in my post about saving for college, my money isn?t just for lattes and iPads. We are constantly watching our money for the future. Seeing my mom and inlaws in retirement, I have to say?if you plan right, it looks freakin sweet. Lucky for me, my company has awesome planning resources and programs. I honestly haven?t had to think much about it. We had our accounts looked at by a?financial?adviser?friend and we seem pretty well established.

That being said, a few months back I was approached by My Retirement Education Center, a company here in the Triangle, to review a retirement seminar. A 1 hour lunch and learn event to hear about retirement planning. After much maternity leave, I took them up on the offer and headed out to their facility for some learning. I have to say that financial matters are not my forte. I can program, make a mean lasagna, race trains like a kick ass mom but when it comes to investing and such? I am dumb. I have money in mutual funds, 401Ks, Roth IRAs but all because someone else did it for me. I really have no clue how that magic works. I find myself googling silly simple terms and still not knowing what it means. I am an Econ failure. So going into the seminar, I was a little nervous. Would they talk over my head? Would they found out how dumb I really am? I am glad to say, my secret was safe. The owner, Steve, greeted me on arrival and made me very comfortable. The session I went to ended up being with 1 other blogging mom (who knew?) and we seemed to have similar setups. Both working moms with littles and money to invest (no outstanding debt). Steve presented us a great presentation, with lunch!, about all the basics of retirement. How 401K plans work. How to take advantage of the best packages depending on how long you have until retirement. Who you need on your ?team? as a young professional trying to navigate the financial game. I even snuck in some ?dumb? questions and he was happy to answer and relieve my nerves. I have to say I learned a good bit and if I still don?t know, I know which person to ask (Steve!).

One thing I learned that made total sense was social security was created with the idea that a person would live an average of 2 years past retirement. People live WAY beyond that now. So when planning your retirement, it is important to figure out when you plan to retire. Are you a early retiree or older? This will guide you in everything you decide now. Do you plan to travel? Do you plan to have an encore career? It is hard to envision right now for some of us but it helps to have an idea. Oh and I probably will never see Social Security anyway. You?re welcome, old people.

The other big thing I learned was you need a team of pros to help you get the most of your money. You should consider at least a 3 member team of an?attorney, CPA and an investment professional. You can?t expect yourself to do it all. You can?t know everything. Find people to help you. And Steve?s group can help!?One of the greatest things about My Retirement Education Center is it?s mission to provide retirement expertise without a sales pitch. They are there to help you understand?not make money off of you. They aren?t taking a percentage of your investment. They?genuinely?want to help people understand money better. They have done the sales game for years and have decided this is better. Teaching. And that, is something I can admire.

So please take a few minutes to check out their website even if you don?t live in the Triangle area. It gets you thinking about it. His blog?is also ?a great compilation of quick tips and articles on saving that apply to us all. If you are in the area, consider a quick lunch seminar to learn more about your future. They offer a variety of classes. They also do larger groups on site at companies and groups upon request. They even do a weekend getaway at Grove Park Inn to get you away from the hustle and bustle of life to have a little fun and focus on learning.

Thanks again to Steve and the folks at My Retirement Education Center. The class was great and I am so happy there are people out there?genuinely?trying to help dumb people like me :)

Disclaimer: I was given a free lunch and learn session by My Retirement Education Center for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and I truly believe in their services.

BMI, BP Don't Up Prostate Cancer Risk | Cancer Kick

By?Charles Bankhead, Staff Writer, MedPage Today

Metabolic factors did not increase the risk of prostate cancer but modestly raised the risk of prostate cancer mortality, results of a large cohort study showed.

Blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and cholesterol level had no association with prostate cancer, nor did the composite z-score for combined metabolic risk factors.

Higher levels of glucose and triglycerides were associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer compared with men who had the lowest glucose and triglyceride values.

High blood pressure, BMI, and composite metabolic score did predict the risk of dying of prostate cancer, raising the odds by 13% to 62%, as reported online in Cancer.

?The results of the current study add further evidence to support the hypothesis that high levels of metabolic factors, separately or combined, are not related to the development of prostate cancer but are related to an increased risk of disease progression, but with no evidence of synergy between the metabolic factors,? wrote Christel H?ggstr?m, MSc, of Ume? University in Sweden.

?Thus, from a public health perspective, the data from the current study will add some further motivation to control metabolic factors to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and, to some degree, prostate cancer death.?

Several studies have demonstrated a modest association between excess body weight (expressed as BMI) and prostate cancer. Obesity and higher BMI have a stronger association with prostate cancer mortality.

Relatively few studies have examined relationships between specific metabolic factors and prostate cancer, and most investigations have involved small numbers of patients, the authors noted in their introduction. The effect of combined metabolic factors on prostate cancer risk has a mixed history in the literature.

To expand the investigation of metabolic factors and prostate cancer risk, H?ggstr?m and colleagues analyzed data from the ongoing Metabolic Syndrome and Cancer Project (Me-Can), which has a database comprising 289,866 men from Sweden, Norway, and Austria.

The Me-Can database contains records of study participants? blood pressure, lipids, glucose, height, weight, and other clinical and demographic characteristics. Investigators grouped the men into quintiles on the basis of metabolic parameters and calculated relative risk for individual parameters and a cumulative risk score.

Analysis of baseline characteristics for all 289,866 study participants showed a mean age of 44 at recruitment and that:

  • 44% were overweight (BMI 25 to 30)
  • 11% were obese (BMI ?30)
  • 38% had hypertension (?140/90 mm Hg)
  • 7% had impaired fasting glucose (?110 to 126 mg/dL)
  • 4% had diabetes (?126 mg/dL)
  • 32% had fasting hypercholesterolemia (?250 mg/dL)
  • 27% had fasting hypertriglyceridemia (?150 mg/dL)
  • 34% were current smokers

During a mean follow-up of 12 years, 6,673 men developed prostate cancer, and 961 study participants died of prostate cancer. Comparing highest versus lowest quintiles for each metabolic parameter, the investigators found that neither the individual parameters nor the composite risk score predicted an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Two risk factors were associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer: fasting glucose (RR 0.82, P=0.03 for trend) and triglycerides (RR 0.88, P=0.001 for trend).

Analysis of associations between risk factors and prostate cancer mortality identified three parameters that predicted an increased risk: BMI (RR 1.36, P=0.013 for trend), systolic blood pressure (RR 1.62, P=0.001 for trend), and diastolic blood pressure (RR 1.24, P=0.001 for trend). Additionally, the adjusted composite score (z score) predicted an increased prostate cancer mortality risk (RR 1.13 for trend).

The investigators also examined associations between risk factors and prostate cancer/prostate cancer mortality. They found stronger associations for cases diagnosed before 1997, which they speculated was a reflection of the introduction of PSA testing and subsequent diagnosis of more early-stage cancers.

The study was supported by the Woorld Cancer Research Fund and the Swedish Cancer Foundation.

The authors had no relevant disclosures.

Skin Cancer Foundation helps children stay sun-safe at school

Because many schools don?t allow students to use sunscreen or wear a hat outdoors during the school day without written permission from a physician, The Skin Cancer Foundation has created a sun protection form that parents and doctors can sign, allowing students to bring these items to school, apply and use as needed. The form is available at www.skincancer.org/schoolnote.

?Every child should have access to proper sun protection at school,? says Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. ?Alarmingly, California is the only state with legislation that gives children the right to take sun protection measures at school. Given the absence of similar legislation in other states, the Foundation hopes to fill this void by providing parents with the necessary means to ensure their children stay safe in the sun at school.?

During a typical school day, it?s not unusual for children to receive a significant amount of sun exposure. Children in elementary school typically have outdoor recess between 10:00am and 2:00pm, a time when the sun is especially intense.

Proper sun protection in childhood can drastically reduce the risk of developing skin cancer as an adult. Suffering just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person?s risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, later in life.

The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended that everyone, regardless of age and skin color, adopt a complete sun protection regimen. At school, children should be able to cover-up with protective clothing, including broad-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses. Additionally, they should wear a broad-spectrum SPF 15 sunscreen every day, and be allowed to bring it to school for easy reapplication.

The Skin Cancer Foundation?s sun protection form ensures that children have access to recommended sun safety measures. The Skin Cancer Foundation strives to educate children about the dangers of skin cancer and the need for early detection and prevention.

The Foundation recently debuted Sun Smart U, an interactive education program that includes a robust website for teachers and a free downloadable lesson plan.

Sun Smart U was designed in accordance with national health standards for middle and high school students and may be particularly useful to health and physical education teachers.

Through Sun Smart U, students learn about the dangers of tanning through the real-life story of a young woman with Stage III melanoma, and the importance of incorporating a proper sun protection regimen into their everyday lifestyles.?

Researchers explore how the brain perceives direction and location

Monday, October 22, 2012

The Who asked "who are you?" but Dartmouth neurobiologist Jeffrey Taube asks "where are you?" and "where are you going?" Taube is not asking philosophical or theological questions. Rather, he is investigating nerve cells in the brain that function in establishing one's location and direction.

Taube, a professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, is using microelectrodes to record the activity of cells in a rat's brain that make possible spatial navigation?how the rat gets from one place to another?from "here" to "there." But before embarking to go "there," you must first define "here."

Survival Value

"Knowing what direction you are facing, where you are, and how to navigate are really fundamental to your survival," says Taube. "For any animal that is preyed upon, you'd better know where your hole in the ground is and how you are going to get there quickly. And you also need to know direction and location to find food resources, water resources, and the like."

Not only is this information fundamental to your survival, but knowing your spatial orientation at a given moment is important in other ways, as well. Taube points out that it is a sense or skill that you tend to take for granted, which you subconsciously keep track of. "It only comes to your attention when something goes wrong, like when you look for your car at the end of the day and you can't find it in the parking lot," says Taube.

Perhaps this is a momentary lapse, a minor navigational error, but it might also be the result of brain damage due to trauma or a stroke, or it might even be attributable to the onset of a disease such as Alzheimer's. Understanding the process of spatial navigation and knowing its relevant areas in the brain may be crucial to dealing with such situations.

The Cells Themselves

One critical component involved in this process is the set of neurons called "head direction cells." These cells act like a compass based on the direction your head is facing. They are located in the thalamus, a structure that sits on top of the brainstem, near the center of the brain.

He is also studying neurons he calls "place cells." These cells work to establish your location relative to some landmarks or cues in the environment. The place cells are found in the hippocampus, part of the brain's temporal lobe. They fire based not on the direction you are facing, but on where you are located.

Studies were conducted using implanted microelectrodes that enabled the monitoring of electrical activity as these different cell types fired.

Taube explains that the two populations?the head direction cells and the place cells?talk to one another. "They put that information together to give you an overall sense of 'here,' location wise and direction wise," he says. "That is the first ingredient for being able to ask the question, how am I going to get to 'point B' if I am at 'point A.' It is the starting point on the cognitive map."

The Latest Research

Taube and Stephane Valerio, his postdoctoral associate for the last four years, have just published a paper in the journal Nature Neuroscience, highlighting the head direction cells. Valerio has since returned to the Universit? Bordeaux in France.

The studies described in Nature Neuroscience discuss the responses of the spatial navigation system when an animal makes an error and arrives at a destination other than the one targeted ?its home refuge, in this case. The authors describe two error-correction processes that may be called into play?resetting and remapping?differentiating them based on the size of error the animal makes when performing the task.

When the animal makes a small error and misses the target by a little, the cells will reset to their original setting, fixing on landmarks it can identify in its landscape. "We concluded that this was an active behavioral correction process, an adjustment in performance," Taube says. However, if the animal becomes disoriented and makes a large error in its quest for home, it will construct an entirely new cognitive map with a permanent shift in the directional firing pattern of the head direction cells." This is the "remapping."

Taube acknowledges that others have talked about remapping and resetting, but they have always regarded them as if they were the same process. "What we are trying to argue in this paper is that they are really two different, separate brain processes, and we demonstrated it empirically," he says. "To continue to study spatial navigation, in particular how you correct for errors, you have to distinguish between these two qualitatively different responses."

Taube says other investigators will use this distinction as a basis for further studies, particularly in understanding how people correct their orientation when making navigational errors.

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain -- rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF -- a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left -- again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

The 90s strike back! - Video Game Blog, Video Games Reviews ...

Ever since the console release of Capcom?s Street Fighter 4 in 2009 2d fighters are enjoying a good degree of popularity once again. Trying to ride the success of Marvel VS Capcom 3 and the Marvel Avengers movie, Capcom releases on PSN and XBLA a new collection called Marvel VS Capcom Origins, cointaining two 90s two dimensions fighters: Marvel Super Heroes and the first Marvel VS Capcom.
Do these two games still hold their own after all these years or will Capcom?s collection only attract nostalgics? Let?s find out.

Nostalgia calling

To be completely honest, I can?t really understand why these two games have been choosen for the collection.
The Marvel VS Capcom franchise main feature is the tag team mechanic, where each player chooses 2 or more fighters, can swap them anytime during battle and even unleash some devasting combination attacks; Marvel Super Heroes features the standard 1 vs 1 formula without any tag team option
It?s not like it?s a bad game, but I think including X Men VS Street Fighter or Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter too would have been more appropriate, since they are the first steps of the VS franchise and, nostalgia wise, it would have been a better choice altogether.
And nostalgia definitely is one of the main selling points of this collection and Capcom didn?t even try to hide it!
The Games are identical to their 90s counterparts in every possible way: graphics wise, sound wise and gameplay wise these two games are a trip back in the 90s, when these big detailed sprites dominated arcade cabinets.
To improve the nostalgic feeling of the collection, Capcom added 2 video options, one to simulate old CRT televisions and another to slight distort the image, simulating an old arcade cabinet screen.
These options will probably be fun for a couple minutes and most players will revert to the regular video option after some time.
Gameplay wise, how do the two fighters hold up? Quite frankly, they?re still very fun, despite their shortcomings.

Avengers, Assemble!

As I mentioned before Marvel Super Heroes, the second Capcom fighter featuring Marvel comics heroes, sports a traditonal 1 versus 1 gameplay, where players can unleash special attacks through the usual 2d fighters stick motions and even more devastating attacks called Infinity Combo after charging a special meter bar placed at the bottom of the screen. The fighters roster is quite diverse and feautures many fans? favourites like Captain America, Spiderman, Iron Man, Wolverine, Wolverine and Cyclops and a few villains like Blackheart, Shuma Gorath and Doctor DoomGameplay is enriched by the presence of special gems called Infinity Gems which grant some bonuses for a short amount of time during the fight.Graphics and sound wise we get what we could expect from a 90s 2d fighting game: sprites and backgrounds are nicely detailed and animated and the soundtrack manages to do its job, although some of the tracks sound a bit repetitive.

When two different worlds collide

Marvel VS Capcom: Clash Of The Super Heroes, released in 1998, is a turning point of the franchise: with this game Capcom started to expand the roster way beyond the Street Fighters characters including characters from other Capcom games like Darkstalker, Megaman, Strider and Captain Command. The Marvel roster gets expanded too with the inclusion of Spiderman?s nemesis Venom and a mix of characters already present in Marvel Super Heroes and XMen Vs Street Fighters.
Gameplay wise Capcom refined the tag team formula: players will choose two characters to use in combat and will be able to switch them at will during play. Nice additions are the Duo Team Attacks which allow the player to use both characters at the same time for a brief time with unlimited super moves usage and the Assist Characters which can be summoned for a limited amount of time to assist the player. These characters aren?t normaly usable so it feels like each time is composed by 3 characters, a prelude to the future evolution of the series.
Graphics wise we?re not too far from the other game in the collection except for a bit more details in both characters and backgrounds. The same can be said about soundtrack: it does its job well but there?s hardly anything memorable.

Now it?s time to take them on!

The only modern touch in the collection is, obviuosly, the online multiplayer mode. The online infrastructure is really well done: I experienced very little lag playing with people all over Europe and even when playing with someone far I didn?t experience too many problems.
The main issue with playing online comes from some unbalancing problems of the games: people playing online will try to win at any cost, so you?ll probably costantly fight the powered up versions of Hulk, Iron Man and Venom.
Not being technical fighters, the charm of these games lies in the easy to pick up and play nature and the unbalanced roster but with competitive play this may become an issue.
Final Verdict

I used to play these games when they were released and I had fun playing them again, probably as much as I did back then thanks to online play; nostalgia has probably a lot to do with this.
Players who never played these games in the past are probably better off looking elsewhere since some others 2d fighters are more refinite with more modern and compelling mechanics. Nostalgics like myself are probably going to really enjoying themselves, remembering those times where reading ? Insert Coins? on the arcade cabinets screens made them full of excitement!

The game is available on both PSN (12,99 euros) and XBox Live Arcade (1200 Microsoft points)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is both under and over diagnosed, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is both under and over diagnosed. That's the result of one of the largest studies conducted on ADHD in the United States, published in the Journal of Attention Disorders.

A substantial number of children being treated for ADHD may not have the disorder, while many children who do have the symptoms are going untreated, according to the 10-year Project to Learn about ADHD in Youth (PLAY) study funded by the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention

"Childhood ADHD is a major public health problem. Many studies rely on parent reporting of an ADHD diagnosis, which is a function of both the child's access to care in order to be diagnosed, and the parent's perception that there is a problem," said Robert McKeown, of the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, who led the South Carolina portion of the study.

"Further complicating our understanding of the prevalence of ADHD and its treatment is that the diagnosis often is made by a clinician who has little experience assessing and diagnosing mental disorders. As a result, ADHD is both under and over diagnosed," said McKeown, distinguished professor emeritus in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics.

The study, conducted between 2002-2012, was a collaborative research project with the University of South Carolina's Arnold School and School of Medicine and the University of Oklahoma's Health Sciences Center.

"To our knowledge, this is the largest community-based epidemiologic study of ADHD to date," McKeown said.

The study found that 8.7 percent of children in the community sample in South Carolina had enough symptoms to fit the ADHD diagnosis at the time of the initial assessment. The percentage was 10.6 in Oklahoma.

The report also revealed that the number of parents in the community sample who reported that their children were taking ADHD medication was 10.1 percent in South Carolina and 7.4 percent in Oklahoma. Yet, of the children taking ADHD medication, only 39.5 percent in South Carolina and 28.3 percent in Oklahoma actually met the case definition of ADHD.

"ADHD is not a snap diagnosis. It requires data from several sources and across several domains and considerable expertise to diagnose accurately and differentiate from other possible problems," McKeown said.

The CDC reports that ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood. Often first diagnosed in childhood, ADHD affects a child's ability to do well in school and his or her ability to make and keep friends. While many children "outgrow" the disorder, ADHD can continue into adulthood, impacting the individual's ability to work and function in society.

McKeown said the study found that many children taking ADHD medication did not meet the ADHD diagnostic criteria.

"These children had more ADHD symptoms, on average, than the other comparison children. Many children meeting case criteria had not been previously identified and were not receiving medication treatment, suggesting that the condition remains underdiagnosed," he said.

The study was designed to follow children from elementary school through adolescence (ages 5 -- 13) and investigate the short- and long-term outcomes of children with ADHD. Teachers screened 10,427 children in four school districts across the two states where the study was conducted. ADHD ratings by teacher and parent reports of diagnosis and medication treatment were used to determine whether children were high or low risk for ADHD.

Study questions focused on the prevalence and treated prevalence of ADHD in children; the existence of other health problems in children with ADHD, and the types and rates of health risk behaviors in children with ADHD. The study also looked at treatment patterns, both past and current, of children with ADHD.

"The findings of our study suggest that a fair number of children are being treated who do not meet case criteria and that there are children who do meet criteria but are not being treated," McKeown said. "ADHD is not a snap diagnosis. It requires data from several sources and across several domains and considerable expertise to diagnose accurately and differentiate from other possible problems."

Children and adolescents with ADHD also were found to have high rates of other disorders, including oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. They also were more likely to engage in risky or impulsive behaviors, he said.

"We will follow up on these initial reports as the children age to determine what, if any, changes have occurred in the symptom patterns, as well as in the types of health risk behaviors," McKeown said.

"We hope that this will shed light on the prevalence and the treatment of ADHD and will lead practitioners to seek consultation if they are not trained to assess, diagnose and treat ADHD," he said. "We also hope it will lead parents and practitioners to assess all the treatment options to determine what works best for each child."

USC researchers involved in the study included Dr. Steven Cuffe of the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, formerly of the USC School of Medicine; Arnold School doctoral student Lorie L. Geryk; and Matteo Botai of the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and Joseph R. Holbrook of the CDC, both formerly at the Arnold School.

Hikers lose 15 pounds each in 6-day Mont. ordeal

Two men missing in Montana's Glacier National Park were reunited with family after rescue. WECI's Scott Zoltan reports.

By Richard Jordan, NBCWashington.com

Two Virginia hikers are happy to be home after surviving in the Montana wilderness for six days.

The men endured winter conditions and rugged terrain while stuck in the?backcountry of Glacier National Park.

?I don't think our wives will let us go for many years,? said Neal Peckens, of Herndon, Va.

See the orignal story on NBCWashington.com

He and Jason Hiser can laugh about it now, but for six days the avid hikers were lost in wintry conditions in the mountains. Snow on the ground covered their trail, and their topographic map blew away from them.

Rescue teams located the two men on Monday, after searching back country near Two Medicine, Mont. for days, according to The Associated Press.

Stranded more than 2,000 miles from home, the hikers' thoughts were with their families.

?My wife was having a baby shower on Saturday when I still wasn't home yet so I was worried about ruining that as well,? Hiser said.

He is expecting his first child.

Peckens? wife anxiously waited with their son, who just turned a year old.

The families called authorities when the men didn't return on time.

?I think that the people at home had it worse than we had it, sadly,? Peckens said.

Peckens and Hiser were finally?rescued Monday.

?We saw helicopters,? Hiser said. ?We had a couple fly over our heads, but they couldn't see us through the fog.?

With the two-day food supply running low, Hiser was in charge of rationing the food.

?For four days in a row we each ate a quarter of a Clif bar per day,? he said.

Hunger was constantly on their minds. They each lost about 15 pounds while waiting for rescue.?They said the days they spent together hunkered down in a tent mostly consisted of talking about the first meal they would eat once they were rescued.

The ordeal was a test in endurance and friendship.

More from NBCWashington.com:

?We never got in any arguments,? Hiser said. ?We never got irritated. We just kind of used our heads and thought through things. There are a lot of people out there that would take that situation a lot differently. So I think we learned that we were with the right guy.?

Mostly, they learned the best thing about being home.

?It?s a lot warmer,? Hiser said.

?And drier,? Peckens added.

?A lot more sunshine,? Hiser said.

?It?s really nice to be home,? Peckens said. ?We are very grateful for everyone that has shown us so much support.?

Mattress USA Buys Carolina Rustica - Home Furnishings Business

Mattress USA?has acquired upper-end furniture retailer Carolina Rustica?of Concord, N.C.

The combined entities will continue under the Mattress USA organization and will operate three retail stores, two in Michigan as US-Mattress.com, and one in North Carolina under the Carolina Rustica name.

"As our business continues to grow in both the mattress and furniture retail segments, bringing Carolina Rustica into the fold is perfect because of their brand name recognition in high-end furniture and lighting, as well as their similar business model, running a brick-and-mortar retail operation in tandem with a very active Web site" said Joe Nashif, president and CEO of Mattress USA Inc.

With the merger, Carolina Rustica and Mattress USA will represent more than 200 manufacturers in mattresses, furniture, lighting, bedding and accessories. The company will continue to focus on promoting its best-selling brand names like Sealy, Simmons, Serta, Lexington Furniture, Stanley Furniture,?and Bernhardt,?while introducing consumers to up and coming brands not normally seen on e-commerce sites of their size.

"This was a perfect opportunity for us to capitalize on the experience and resources of a dynamic multi-channel merchant who shares our values. We had reached a point where our growth and expansion plans were actually being hindered by our own infrastructure," said Richard Sexton, who will remain on as president of Carolina Rustica. "By being part of this new organization, we can draw upon their considerable expertise in all aspects of operations, marketing and fulfillment. We will also be able to expand our overall furniture business by leveraging our mutual strengths in the furniture segment."

The company plans to expand the store at Carollina Rustica's Gibson Mill location in N.C., adding 8,000 square feet of retail space by year end. It is anticipated that the merged company will continue to hire at its Brighton, Mich., headquarters as a result of this merger and its own organic growth.

Changing Jobs? Take Your 401(k) and ... Roll It! - The Retirement ...

Changing Jobs? Take Your 401(k) and ... Roll It! If you've lost your job, or are changing jobs, you may be wondering what to do with your 401(k) plan account. It's important to understand your options. What will I be entitled to? If you leave your job (voluntarily or involuntarily), you'll be entitled to a distribution of your vested balance. Your vested balance always includes your own contributions (pretax, after-tax, and Roth) and typically any investment earnings on those amounts. It also includes employer contributions (and earnings) that have satisfied your plan's vesting schedule. In general, you must be 100% vested in your employer's contributions after 3 years of service ("cliff vesting"), or you must vest gradually, 20% per year until you're fully vested after 6 years ("graded vesting"). Plans can have faster vesting schedules, and some even have 100% immediate vesting. You'll also be 100% vested once you've reached your plan's normal retirement age. It's important for you to understand how your particular plan's vesting schedule works, because you'll forfeit any employer contributions that haven't vested by the time you leave your job. Your summary plan description (SPD) will spell out how the vesting schedule for your particular plan works. If you don't have one, ask your plan administrator for it. If you're on the cusp of vesting, it may make sense to wait a bit before leaving, if you have that luxury. While this pool of dollars may look attractive, don't spend it unless you absolutely need to. If you take a distribution you'll be taxed, at ordinary income tax rates, on the entire value of your account except for any after-tax or Roth 401(k) contributions you've made. And, if you're not yet age 55, an additional 10% penalty may apply to the taxable portion of your payout. (Special rules may apply if you receive a lump-sum distribution and you were born before 1936, or if the lump-sum includes employer stock.) If your vested balance is more than $5,000, you can leave your money in your employer's plan until you reach normal retirement age. But your employer must also allow you to make a direct rollover to an IRA or to another employer's 401(k) plan. As the name suggests, in a direct rollover the money passes directly from your 401(k) plan account to the IRA or other plan. This is preferable to a "60-day rollover," where you get the check and then roll the money over yourself, because your employer has to withhold 20% of the taxable portion of a 60-day rollover. You can still roll over the entire amount of your distribution, but you'll need to come up with the 20% that's been withheld until you recapture that amount when you file your income tax return. Should I roll over to my new employer's 401(k) plan or to an IRA? Assuming both options are available to you, there's no right or wrong answer to this question. There are strong arguments to be made on both sides. You need to weigh all of the factors, and make a decision based on your own needs and priorities. It's best to have a professional assist you with this, since the decision you make may have significant consequences--both now and in the future. Reasons to roll over to an IRA: ????????? You generally have more investment choices with an IRA than with an employer's 401(k) plan. You typically may freely move your money around to the various investments offered by your IRA trustee, and you may divide up your balance among as many of those investments as you want. By contrast, employer-sponsored plans typically give you a limited menu of investments (usually mutual funds) from which to choose. ????????? You can freely allocate your IRA dollars among different IRA trustees/custodians. There's no limit on how many direct, trustee-to-trustee IRA transfers you can do in a year. This gives you flexibility to change trustees often if you are dissatisfied with investment performance or customer service. It can also allow you to have IRA accounts with more than one institution for added diversification. With an employer's plan, you can't move the funds to a different trustee unless you leave your job and roll over the funds. ????????? An IRA may give you more flexibility with distributions. Your distribution options in a 401(k) plan depend on the terms of that particular plan, and your options may be limited. However, with an IRA, the timing and amount of distributions is generally at your discretion (until you reach age 70? and must start taking required minimum distributions in the case of a traditional IRA). ????????? You can roll over (essentially "convert") your 401(k) plan distribution to a Roth IRA. You'll have to pay taxes on the amount you roll over (minus any after-tax contributions you've made), but any qualified distributions from the Roth IRA in the future will be tax free. Reasons to roll over to your new employer's 401(k) plan: ????????? Many employer-sponsored plans have loan provisions. If you roll over your retirement funds to a new employer's plan that permits loans, you may be able to borrow up to 50% of the amount you roll over if you need the money. You can't borrow from an IRA--you can only access the money in an IRA by taking a distribution, which may be subject to income tax and penalties. (You can, however, give yourself a short-term loan from an IRA by taking a distribution, and then rolling the dollars back to an IRA within 60 days.) ????????? A rollover to your new employer's 401(k) plan may provide greater creditor protection than a rollover to an IRA. Most 401(k) plans receive unlimited protection from your creditors under federal law. Your creditors (with certain exceptions) cannot attach your plan funds to satisfy any of your debts and obligations, regardless of whether you've declared bankruptcy. In contrast, any amounts you roll over to a traditional or Roth IRA are generally protected under federal law only if you declare bankruptcy. Any creditor protection your IRA may receive in cases outside of bankruptcy will generally depend on the laws of your particularstate. If you are concerned about asset protection, be sure to seek the assistance of a qualified professional. ????????? You may be able to postpone required minimum distributions. For traditional IRAs, these distributions must begin by April 1 following the year you reach age 70?. However, if you work past that age and are still participating in your employer's 401(k) plan, you can delay your first distribution from that plan until April 1 following the year of your retirement. (You also must own no more than 5% of the company.) ????????? If your distribution includes Roth 401(k) contributions and earnings, you can roll those amounts over to either a Roth IRA or your new employer's Roth 401(k) plan (if it accepts rollovers). If you roll the funds over to a Roth IRA, the Roth IRA holding period will determine when you can begin receiving tax-free qualified distributions from the IRA. So if you're establishing a Roth IRA for the first time, your Roth 401(k) dollars will be subject to a brand new 5-year holding period. On the other hand, if you roll the dollars over to your new employer's Roth 401 (k) plan, your existing 5-year holding period will carry over to the new plan. This may enable you to receive tax-free qualified distributions sooner. When evaluating whether to initiate a rollover always be sure to (1) ask about possible surrender charges that may be imposed by your employer plan, or new surrender charges that your IRA may impose, (2) compare investment fees and expenses charged by your IRA (and investment funds) with those charged by your employer plan (if any), and (3) understand any accumulated rights or guarantees that you may be giving up by transferring funds out of your employer plan. What about outstanding plan loans? In general, if you have an outstanding plan loan, you'll need to pay it back, or the outstanding balance will be taxed as if it had been distributed to you in cash. If you can't pay the loan back before you leave, you'll still have 60 days to roll over the amount that's been treated as a distribution to your IRA. Of course, you'll need to come up with the dollars from other sources. Aging Population's Demand For Care Soars In Calif. While Oregon ...

News outlets report on the growing need for long-term care and offer insights into the home care workforce.

California Healthline: AARP Study: California Faces Soaring Demand For Long-Term Care
California faces soaring demand for long-term care services, with a senior population expected to surge 90% by 2032, according to a new study by AARP. The number of seniors age 85 and over -- those most likely to need long-term care -- will grow by 78%, significantly faster than the U.S. average, the report said. Most people in that demographic category live below 250% of the federal poverty line and will probably qualify for need-based long-term care and other forms of public support, AARP researchers predicted (Hart, 10/15).

Kaiser Health News: Putting The 'Care' Into Long-Term Care Insurance
Oregon, for example, has new rules on how to appeal a denial on a long-term care insurance claim. Previously, the only way to appeal a decision was in court, an arduous process for a person who may be elderly, sick and in a nursing home (Foden-Vencil, 10/17).

Meanwhile, NPR offers a?pair of stories exploring issues related to the home care workforce -??

NPR: Home Health Aides Often As Old As Their Clients
As America ages, its 2.5 million home health workers are graying right along with the clients they care for. And by all accounts, these older workers are especially well suited to the job (Ludden, 10/17).

NPR: Home Health Aides In Demand, Yet Paid Little
The home care workforce ? some 2.5 million strong ? is one of the nation's fastest growing yet also worst paid. Turnover is high, and with a potential labor shortage looming as the baby boomers age, there are efforts to attract more people to the job. One such effort plays out in a large, sunny room in a Bronx high-rise, where Cooperative Home Care Associates holds an extensive, monthlong training program. On a recent day, two dozen women paired off at rows of hospital beds. As instructors coached them, they took turns lifting each other in a mechanical sling, or gently stretching each other's limbs, as is commonly done for stroke patients (Ludden, 10/16).

Styles Of Home Designs : Home Improvement

There is a variety of?home designs?you can choose from to build your house. The style of designs that appeals to you will be influenced by your taste, family size, and lifestyle. It is important to understand the designs that appeal to you the most, so you can choose the right construction plans.

Know the reason you want to purchase a house prior to choosing which plans. Are you buying a first home? The first home a person owns typically is smaller than future ones. You could, however, need enough area for the family to freely move about and enjoy. Do you want a designer home instead? This style also comes in construction plans. Is it an investment your are looking for in a house? You will find an ideal one within your price range.

We will now examine some of the choices for?house plans?you can find. Ideal floor plans in one storey houses appeal to couples, singles, families and investors. This is the same in the double storey homes. It is all in the way you want the house laid out that counts. These plans can include 3 plus bedrooms to fill your desires.

While looking at the plans on the?home designs?you like the best, notice all the details. Are there enough bedrooms and bathrooms? With the double storey plans, do they include bathrooms on both floors? If you are enjoying the ground floor, it is a hassle to have to climb the stairs to use the facilities. Do the plans have the laundry room situated near the bathrooms? This location makes more sense than when it located in the kitchen. These are questions that need to be answered.

You will need to see if any kind of family room or den is included in the home plans. If you have a spouse and kids, they will have fun enjoying this type of room. This type of room is easily made into a reading or craft room.

To you and many other people the total square footage in the house is a major concern. This often determines the total cost of the house in the end, along with the cost of the plot of land it sits on that is. You need to include what size your land area is, when you are trying to come up with what size house you want. You do not want to put a large house on too small a plot of land. However, you can set a small house on a large plot of land.

Research into reputable firms for your desired?house plans. The higher quality the plans are, the better the house will be. On top of this, you will get more advice on selecting the plans right for your desired house.

You should now understand how to choose which of the?home designs?to make sure you get the right one for you. Do a bit of research before making the final decision. It is not wise to make this decision without taking your time.
