Kyocera Coast (Boost Mobile)

Cell phones don't get much cheaper than 30 bucks without a contract, and in most instances, prices that low are a good sign to stay away. But that isn't the case with the $29.99 Kyocera Coast for Boost Mobile. It has extremely little in the way of features, but it's easy to use, with good call quality, a very nice keypad, and a large, clear external display. If all you need is an inexpensive flip phone?for calls and the occasional text, the Kyocera Coast is one of the best you can get.

Design, Call Quality, and Plan Pricing
There's nothing fancy about the Coast. It's a plain Jane flip phone that measures 3.94 by 2.05 by 0.68 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.7 ounces. It's made up of soft touch black plastic, with a textured back panel that gives it the look of a rugged phone. It isn't ruggedized, but it feels solid for its price. There's a power port and Volume buttons on the left and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the right. The Coast is also ULE-certified for having an environmentally friendly build.

The front of the phone is home to a 1.44-inch external display, which is surprisingly large. It only has 128-by-128-pixel resolution, but that's good enough to clearly see your battery life, message notifications, reception, and time. Inside, the 2.4-inch LCD bumps the resolution up to 320-by-240, which looks decent. The default font is easy to read, but there's an option to make it larger as well.

The Coast has an excellent keypad, with large, well-separated keys. They felt a little stiff at first, but I was able to quickly break them in after using the phone for just a few minutes. The navigation and selection buttons are few and intuitive, unlike some of the needlessly complicated control pads I've seen on feature phones lately. Using a number pad for texting is never ideal, but at least this one is large and features a surprisingly robust autocomplete feature. There's a threaded view for text messages, so you can read them out like a conversation, but there's no built-in email support.

The Kyocera Coast is a 3G phone with no Wi-Fi. Reception was solid, and voice quality is very good. Voices sound clear and pleasant in the phone's earpiece, though they distort some at top volume. Calls made with the phone are extremely clear, with average background noise cancellation. The speakerphone sounds a little harsh but is loud enough to hear outdoors, and calls sounded fine over a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset; Nuance-powered voice dialing allows you to make hands-free calls via Bluetooth or speakerphone. The removable 870mAh battery was good for a decent 5 hours and 47 minutes of talk time.

Boost offers unlimited, contract-free talk and text plans starting at $50 per month (you also get unlimited Web data). For every six months you pay your bill on time, your monthly fee reduces by $5, until you reach $35 per month. There are also daily unlimited plans for $2 a day, or you can pay as you go at $0.20 per minute or per text message.

Apps, Features, and Conclusions
You're not expecting much else from this phone, right? Good. Of course, you still get some very basic apps, like an alarm, calculator, calendar, and stopwatch, which are par for the course across all phones. There's also a few games, including Midnight Bowling 3 and Uno. And you get an extremely basic built-in Access NetFront 4.1 Web browser, which reads WAP pages. Data speeds aren't so fast, and it isn't very easy to read tiny site text on the phone's display, but if you have an unlimited plan, it's there if you need it.

There's no music or video player, so this isn't much of a multimedia device. You do get a 2-megapixel camera on the back of the phone for photos. There's only 61MB of free internal memory, and no microSD card slot; that means you can only take up to 78 pictures. But while this camera captures better images than images the VGA camera on the Samsung Factor, they're still pretty poor. Photos look washed out and hazy, especially with brighter colors, which tend to blow out quite easily. There's also no easy way to transfer photos off the phone other than sending them in a message.

But as long as you go in with realistic expectations, the Kyocera Coast is actually a very good buy. If you're looking for a simple, inexpensive phone for making calls and sending texts from time to time, the Kyocera Coast is your best bet on Boost. The Samsung Factor is another decent choice, though the Coast has a better display, a better camera, and better battery life. If you're more interested in texting, Boost has lots of solid, inexpensive keyboarded options, like the LG Rumor Reflex, the Motorola Theory, and the Sanyo Innuendo. But no other phone is less expensive or easier to the use than the Kyocera Coast.

Homebrew 8-bit computer packs in 16 cores, multitasks like a champ

DNP 16core homebrew computer built out of ATMegas, multitasks beautifully

It looks like Jake Eisenmann has done it again. A couple of years after the hobbyist hacker built his first 8-bit computer, he's cobbled together yet another one, but this time with a whopping 16 cores. Appropriately dubbed the DUO Mega, the multicore wonder is made with 16 ATMega328p microcontrollers, each connected to an 8-bit data bus and designed to interpret a custom bytecode that runs the software. Compiled inside a nondescript plastic bin, the machine is also comprised of 16MHz crystal oscillators attached to each of the aforementioned cores, three Arduino UNO boards, 32kb of SRAM, 512kb of flash memory, eight breadboards, an Ethernet shield, a VGA out port and a multitude of components that combine to look like that mess of wires seen above. Because of all that processing power, this relatively primitive machine multitasks beautifully and can perform complicated calculations at an impressive clip. To get a demo of what this marvelous feat of DIY computing can do, have a peek at Eisenmann's video, complete with an 8-bit soundtrack, after the break.

Aaron Hernandez investigation: What's next step for police?

Local and state police spent nearly four hours at the house of New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez Saturday in connection with a murder investigation. Some media reports suggest an arrest warrant for obstruction of justice could be executed soon.

In this image taken from video, a state police officer and dog arrive outside the home of New England Patriots football player Aaron Hernandez Saturday in North Attleboro, Mass. State police searched Hernandez's home as they investigate the killing of Odin Lloyd, a semipro football player whose body was found nearby.

Everyone in the National Football League knew that Aaron Hernandez was likely to come with baggage. Elite tight ends from major college programs like the University of Florida do not drop into the fourth round of the NFL draft ? as Hernandez did in 2010 ? unless there are lingering questions. Big ones.

Now those questions are coming to the fore as a murder investigation swirls around Hernandez.

Local and state police intensified their investigation of Hernandez Saturday, searching his house and grounds for nearly four hours and leaving with about 10 bags of evidence, according to the Los Angeles Times. Moreover, a paper warrant for Hernandez's arrest on obstruction of justice charges has been issued but not yet executed, reports FOX 25 Boston.

A paper warrant is often issued as a way to persuade defense attorneys to cooperate, said FOX 25's legal analyst, Brad Bailey.

"It may be that this is a squeeze tactic," he said. "It may be telling Mr. Hernandez that we have a warrant, a warrant for a crime that has a potential maximum penalty of seven years in prison, is a tactic to get him to come to the table, start talking and start cooperating. And that's where the lawyers may be saying, 'OK, we got it. You got our attention. We're willing to respond.' "

ABC originally reported that Hernandez "destroyed his home security system,'' and that he handed over his cellphone to authorities "in pieces." Numerous reports also note that Hernandez had a cleaning service scrub his house Monday.

Other media reports have established a cursory timeline in the case. The Boston Globe has reported that video images show Hernandez with Odin Lloyd, a semipro football player, in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston early Monday morning. The Fox 25 report cites sources saying there is video evidence of Hernandez and two men in hooded sweatshirts walking into Hernandez's home between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Police say Lloyd was murdered ? shot in the back of the head ? at an industrial park near Hernandez's North Attleborough, Mass., home before dawn Monday.

Hernandez has found himself tailed by trouble since his days as a member of the University of Florida Gators.

In 2007, Hernandez was one of four Gators interviewed by police after the shooting of two men, one fatally, in Gainesville, Fla., the night after the Gators lost to Auburn, 20-17. He was never charged with any crime.

Before the NFL draft in 2010, Hernandez admitted to NFL teams that he had failed numerous drug tests, and concern among NFL personnel about Hernandez's potential connection to people with gang ties led him to drop to the fourth round, reports Sports Illustrated.

More recently, on May 18, police found a handgun apparently discarded under a vehicle near where Hernandez was accosted by a New York Jets fan at 2:26 a.m. in Providence, R.I. Police were never able to identify whose gun it was or how it got there, according to the Sports Illustrated report.

Then last week, a civil lawsuit against Hernandez was filed, alleging that Hernandez shot a man, Alexander Bradley, in south Florida in February, injuring Bradley's arm and causing him to lose an eye. "Hernandez shot him," said Bradley's lawyer, David Jaroslawicz, in a phone interview with Sports Illustrated. "It's either a negligence case or a deliberate shooting. We'll see if Hernandez wants to come in and raise his right hand and tell us what happened."

Some who know Hernandez say is has a good heart but had a difficult time coping after his father's death in 2006 and has fallen in with the wrong crowd. University of Florida coaches always worried when Hernandez returned home to Bristol, Conn., according to Sports Illustrated.

"There were always people that were trying to surround themselves with him that weren't in his best interest and they were around him," one former coach said. "For him, it's like anything else. He's a good-hearted kid who had a hard time saying no."

Militants kill 9 foreign tourists, 1 Pakistani

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? At least a dozen Islamic militants wearing police uniforms shot to death nine foreign tourists and one Pakistani before dawn Sunday as they were visiting one of the world's highest mountains in a remote area of northern Pakistan that has been largely peaceful, officials said.

The foreigners who were killed included five Ukrainians, three Chinese and one Russian, said Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. One Chinese tourist was wounded in the attack and was rescued, he said.

The local branch of the Taliban took responsibility for the killings, saying it was to avenge the death of a leader killed in a recent U.S. drone strike.

The shooting was one of the worst attacks on foreigners in Pakistan in recent years and is likely to damage the country's already struggling tourism industry. Pakistan's mountainous north ? considered until now relatively safe ? is one of the main attractions in a country beset with insurgency and other political instability.

The attack took place at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world at 8,126 meters (26,660 feet). Nanga Parbat is notoriously difficult to climb and is known as the "killer mountain" because of numerous mountaineering deaths in the past. It's unclear if the tourists were planning to climb the mountain or were just visiting the base camp, which is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

The gunmen were wearing uniforms used by the Gilgit Scouts, a paramilitary police force that patrols the area, said the interior minister. The attackers abducted two local guides to find their way to the remote base camp. One of the guides was killed in the shooting, and the other has been detained and is being questioned, said Khan.

"The purpose of this attack was to give a message to the world that Pakistan is unsafe for travel," said the interior minister in a speech in the National Assembly, which passed a resolution condemning the incident. "The government will take all measures to ensure the safety of foreign tourists."

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack, saying their Jundul Hafsa group carried out the shooting as retaliation for the death of the Taliban's deputy leader, Waliur Rehman, in a U.S. drone attack on May 29.

"By killing foreigners, we wanted to give a message to the world to play their role in bringing an end to the drone attacks," Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location.

At least a dozen gunmen were involved in the attack, local police officer Jahangir Khan said.

The attackers beat up the Pakistanis who were accompanying the tourists, took their money and tied them up, said a senior local government official. They checked the identities of the Pakistanis and shot to death one of them, possibly because he was a minority Shiite Muslim, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Although Gilgit-Baltistan is a relatively peaceful area, it has experienced attacks by radical Sunni Muslims on Shiites in recent years.

The attackers took the money and passports from the foreigners and then gunned them down, said the official. It's unclear how the Chinese tourist who was rescued managed to avoid being killed. The base camp has basic wooden huts, but most tourists choose to sleep in their own tents.

Local police chief Barkat Ali said they first learned of the attack when one of the local guides called the police station around 1 a.m. on Sunday. The military airlifted the bodies to Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, Sunday afternoon.

"We hope Pakistani authorities will do their best to find the culprits of this crime," the Ukrainian ambassador to Pakistan, Volodymyr Lakomov, told reporters outside the hospital where the bodies were taken.

The Pakistani government condemned the "brutal act of terrorism" in a statement sent to reporters.

"Those who have committed this heinous crime seem to be attempting to disrupt the growing relations of Pakistan with China and other friendly countries," said a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.

Pakistan has very close ties with neighboring China and is sensitive to any issue that could harm the relationship. Pakistani officials have reached out to representatives from China and Ukraine to convey their sympathies, the Foreign Ministry said.

Many foreign tourists stay away from Pakistan because of the perceived danger of visiting a country that is home to a large number of Islamic militant groups, such as the Taliban and al-Qaida, which mostly reside in the northwest near the Afghan border. A relatively small number of intrepid foreigners visit Gilgit-Baltistan during the summer to marvel at the peaks of the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, including K2, the second highest mountain in the world.

Syed Mehdi Shah, the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, condemned the attack and expressed fear that it would seriously damage the region's tourism industry.

"A lot of tourists come to this area in the summer, and our local people work to earn money from these people," said Shah. "This will not only affect our area, but will adversely affect all of Pakistan."

The area has been cordoned off by police and paramilitary soldiers, and a military helicopter was searching the area, said Shah.

"God willing we will find the perpetrators of this tragic incident," said Shah.

The government suspended the chief secretary and top police chief in Gilgit-Baltistan following the attack and ordered an inquiry into the incident, said Khan, the interior minister.

White Sox capitalize late to beat Royals

By DAVE SKRETTA

updated 6:21 p.m. ET June 22, 2013

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Royals had a runner on third base with one out in the eighth inning and left him there. The Chicago White Sox had the same situation in the ninth and brought him home.

That about summed up their game on Saturday.

The White Sox eked out a 3-2 victory when ace reliever Jesse Crain shut down the Royals in a shaky eighth inning, and Alejandro De Aza provided his timely sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Jordan Danks from third base in the top of the ninth.

"We both had the same situation late - had the winning run on third base - and they executed and we didn't," Royals manager Ned Yost said.

It wasn't quite that simple, of course.

Eric Hosmer hit a long fly to right field in the ninth that fell for a triple thanks in part to some miscommunication in the White Sox outfield. But Crain (2-1) calmly got Salvador Perez to pop out and then struck out Lorenzo Cain for his 29th consecutive scoreless appearance.

That kept the game tied going to the ninth inning.

Dayan Viciedo led off with a single against Aaron Crow (3-3), and Jeff Keppinger drew a walk to reach base for the fourth time. Yost brought in closer Greg Holland, and he got pinch-hitter Gordon Beckham to fly out to center field. But that allowed Danks - who was running for Viciedo - to reach third base with one out.

De Aza laid off a couple of pitches out of the zone before ripping a fly ball to right field that was just deep enough to allow Danks to slide home ahead of the throw.

"I was trying to get a pitch that I could make some contact and drive that run in," De Aza said. "The hitters in front me, they all did their job and gave me a chance to drive one in."

Keppinger and Conor Gillaspie also drove in runs for the White Sox, who have taken the first two games in the three-game set after starting 1-6 on their 10-game road trip.

"It seems like we're always on the losing end of one-run games, so fundamentally to get a sac fly to get the winning run, it's a good feeling," Keppinger said. "Hopefully we can build off it."

The Royals, meanwhile, have dropped four straight since climbing back to .500.

"We're all scratching our heads," Yost said. "The consistency of our offense has been a little bit mind-boggling. It's getting them to stay relaxed in situations."

Kansas City (34-38) is 11-33 when scoring three runs or fewer this season.

"It's baseball, man. It's a hard game," the Royals' Mike Moustakas said. "Sometimes you get the job done, sometimes you don't get it done, and that's just kind of how it turns out."

The Royals struck first when Miguel Tejada, starting at second base for the ninth time in his 16-year career, hit a two-out single in the second inning. The 39-year-old then chugged all the way around on a double by Moustakas to give Kansas City the early lead.

It was the first RBI for Moustakas since May 23.

The White Sox threatened in the third when Keppinger singled and Tyler Flowers walked to start the inning. Alex Rios hit a ball down the right-field line that fell foul by just a couple of feet, and then he struck out looking to keep the White Sox off the scoreboard.

At least until the fourth.

Dunn, who was hitting .186 coming into the game, walked leading off the inning. Paul Konerko followed with a single up the middle, and Gillaspie's slow roller up the middle was enough to drive in Dunn with the tying run.

Wade Davis nearly escaped the inning when he got Viciedo to ground into a double play, but Keppinger delivered a single to right that gave the White Sox a 2-1 lead.

Kansas City was poised for a big sixth inning, tying the game on a single by Perez and putting runners on first and second with one out. But reliever Matt Lindstrom entered the game and got Lorenzo Cain to ground into a double play on his first pitch to end the threat.

White Sox starter Jose Quintana wound up going 5 1-3 innings, while Davis made it through seven innings on the warm afternoon. He also gave up two runs for the Royals.

"Tough loss," Davis said, "having a tie game in the ninth inning."

NOTES: Keppinger started at 2B in place of Beckham and finished 3 for 3. ... The Royals activated OF Jarrod Dyson (right high ankle sprain) from the DL and optioned 2B Chris Getz to Triple-A Omaha. ... RHP Dylan Axelrod goes to the mound for the White Sox in Sunday's series finale. RHP James Shields starts for Kansas City.

Sexually Active in High School? Predictors of Hookup Behavior For ...

Sexually Active in High School? Predictors of Hookup Behavior For College Women Researchers have identified several factors associated with an increase in hookups ? casual, no-strings-attached sex ? among women in their first year of college.

?Our findings suggest hooking up during the first year of college is influenced by pre-college hookups, personality, behavioral intentions, the social and situational context, family background and substance use patterns ? particularly marijuana use,? said Robyn L. Fielder, M.S., a research intern at The Miriam Hospital?s Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine in Providence, R.I.

Fielder and her team surveyed 483 incoming first-year female college students about their risk behaviors, personality traits and social environment.

Specific questions covered the students? sexual behavior, hookup attitudes and intentions, self-esteem, religious beliefs, parents? relationship status, alcohol and marijuana use, smoking, impulsivity, and sensation-seeking behavior. Researchers followed up with the women monthly for eight months.

What the researchers found is that pre-college hookups emerged as the strongest predictor of hooking up during freshmen year, suggesting early experiences may provide a model for future behavior.

?These findings suggest that women?s hookup behavior during the first year of college may influence their hookup behavior later in college,? said Fielder.

?That?s why the transition to college is an important time for health care professionals to provide sexual health information and resources to help women make informed choices.?

It?s also important to consider the array of individual, social and contextual factors when studying hookup behavior, she noted.

?Focusing on any one area of influence fails to capture the complicated matrix of forces that influence young adults? relationship decisions,? Fielder added.

The study was published online in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

Wing walker, pilot die in crash at Ohio air show

This photo provided provided WHIO TV shows a plane after it crashed Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Vectren Air Show near Dayton, Ohio. There was no immediate word on the fate of the pilot, wing walker or anyone else aboard the plane. No one on the ground was hurt. (AP Photo/WHIO-TV)

Map locates Vectren Air Show, Dayton, Ohio; 1c x 3 inches; 46.5 mm x 76 mm;

CINCINNATI (AP) ? A plane carrying a wing walker crashed at an air show and exploded into flames Saturday, killing the pilot and stunt walker, authorities said.

The crash of the 450 HP Stearman happened at around 12:45 p.m. at the Vectren Air Show near Dayton in front of thousands of horrified spectators. No one else was hurt.

A video posted on WHIO-TV shows the plane turn upside-down as the performer sits on top of the wing. The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, erupting into flames as spectators screamed.

Ian Hoyt, an aviation photographer and licensed pilot from Findlay, was at the show with his girlfriend. He told The Associated Press he was taking photos as the plane passed by and had just raised his camera to take another shot.

"Then I realized they were too low and too slow. And before I knew it, they hit the ground," he said.

He couldn't tell exactly what happened, but it appeared that the plane stalled and didn't have enough air speed, he said. He credited the pilot for steering clear of spectators and potentially saving lives.

"Had he drifted more, I don't know what would have happened," Hoyt said. He said he had been excited to see the show because he'd never seen the scheduled performer ? wing walker Jane Wicker ? in action.

On the video, the announcer narrates as the plane glides through the sky and rolls over while the stuntwoman perches on a wing.

"Now she's still on that far side. Keep an eye on Jane. Keep an eye on Charlie. Watch this! Jane Wicker, sitting on top of the world," the announcer said, right before the plane makes a quick turn and nosedive.

Federal records show that biplane was registered to Wicker, who lived in Loudon, Va. A man who answered the phone at a number listed for Wicker on her website said he had no comment and hung up.

One of the pilots listed on Wicker's website was named Charlie Schwenker. A post on Jane Wicker Airshows' Facebook page announced the deaths of Wicker and Schwenker and asked for prayers for their families.

A message left at a phone listing for Charles Schwenker in Oakton, Va., wasn't immediately returned.

Dayton International Airport spokeswoman Linda Hughes and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston confirmed that a pilot and stunt walker had died but declined to give their names. The air show also declined to release their identities.

The show was canceled for the rest of the day, but organizers said events would resume Sunday and follow the previous schedule and normal operations. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash.

Another spectator, Shawn Warwick of New Knoxville, told the Dayton Daily News that he was watching the flight through binoculars.

"I noticed it was upside-down really close to the ground. She was sitting on the bottom of the plane," he said. "I saw it just go right into the ground and explode."

Than Tran, of Fairfield, said he could see a look of concern on the wing walker's face just before the plane went down.

"She looked very scared," he said. "Then the airplane crashed on the ground. After that, it was terrible, man ... very terrible."

Wicker's website says she responded to a classified ad from the Flying Circus Airshow in Bealeton, Va., in 1990, for a wing-walking position, thinking it would be fun. She was a contract employee who worked as a Federal Aviation Administration budget analyst, the FAA said.

She told WDTN-TV in an interview this week that her signature move was hanging underneath the plane's wing by her feet and sitting on the bottom of the airplane while it's upside-down.

"I'm never nervous or scared because I know if I do everything as I usually do, everything's going to be just fine," she told the station.

Wicker wrote on her website that she had never had any close calls.

"What you see us do out there is after an enormous amount of practice and fine tuning, not to mention the airplane goes through microscopic care. It is a managed risk and that is what keeps us alive," she wrote.

In 2011, wing walker Todd Green fell 200 feet to his death at an air show in Michigan while performing a stunt in which he grabbed the skid of a helicopter.

In 2007, veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed at the Dayton show when his biplane slammed into the runway while performing loop-to-loops and caught fire.

Organizers were presenting a trimmed-down show and expected smaller crowds at Dayton after the Air Force Thunderbirds and other military participants pulled out this year because of federal budget cuts.

The air show, one of the country's oldest, usually draws around 70,000 people and has a $3.2 million impact on the local economy. Without military aircraft and support, the show expected attendance to be off 30 percent or more.

Autophaser improves sample analysis in areas such as cancer, Alzheimer's and oil spills

June 20, 2013 ? A new software package allows researchers to vastly improve the performance of one of the key tools used to analyse medical and environmental samples.

Autophaser, developed by the University of Warwick and Aberystwyth University, enables researchers to make use of significantly more data when using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers (FT-ICR MS).

FT-ICR is a powerful tool for identifying chemicals and biochemical components in complex mixtures and is used by scientists analysing substances across a wide range of sectors including medical, environmental, and commercial areas such as the petroleum industry.

The software, which is free for academic purposes, will allow much greater confidence in interpreting results. For commercial purposes, the software is available to licence from Warwick Ventures, the commercial arm of the University of Warwick.

The normal method of processing data from FT-ICR MS -- magnitude mode -- effectively ignores half of the information generated, so mass accuracy and resolution are not as high as they could be.

However Autophaser allows researchers to make use of this otherwise discarded data by converting FT-ICR MS results to absorption mode. This gives an improvement in spectral resolution of up to three times and a 41% improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio.

Using Autophaser, researchers will see more peaks in the spectrum, get better sequence coverage in proteins and have more confidence in peak assignments.

Dr David Kilgour of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwick said: "Major decisions are made every day in commercial, medical, and environmental settings on the basis of FT-ICR MS so it's vital that researchers have access to the most accurate processing methods.

"Autophaser unleashes the full potential of this type of mass spectrometry and really pushes back the barriers to the kinds of problems it can tackle.

"By making this software available for free to academic researchers, we envisage its benefits will be felt across many biomedical areas, for example cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's, the pharmaceutical and polymer industries, as well as in environmental analysis such as detecting pollution after oil spills."

Although the advantages of absorption mode FT-ICR MS have been known for nearly 40 years, the technique is still not widely used because a key mathematical hurdle presented a barrier.

The researchers at the University of Warwick and Aberystwyth University solved the problem using a kind of artificial intelligence known as a genetic algorithm.

The research behind the software was conducted by David Kilgour and Peter O'Connor at the University of Warwick and Mark Neal at Aberystwyth University; based on earlier work by Peter O'Connor and a student in his group, Yulin Qi.

Autophaser was recently presented at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry annual conference in the US.

Of Course the NSA Can Keep Inadvertently Acquired Data on US Citizens

Of Course the NSA Can Keep Inadvertently Acquired Data on US CitizensThe Guardian has obtained a series of documents which reveal that, while the NSA is expected to "minimize" collection of data suspected to belong to US citizens, any "inadvertently acquired" domestic communications can still be kept and used without a warrant.

US officials have been at pains to insist that the NSA is only supposed to target non-domestic communications. But the series of guidelines, approved by the secret FISA court and Attorney General Eric Holder back in 2009, outline how domestic US communications can be retained for five years under the right conditions:

  • If communications are "reasonably believed to contain evidence of a crime that has been, is being, or is about to be committed"
  • If communications are encrypted
  • If communications are "reasonably believed" to be of use in maintaining cybersecurity

The guidelines also explain how "unminimized" communications can be handed straight over to the FBI or the CIA, if those agencies specify their own "minimization" procedures. Coming on the back of Obama happily claiming that data collection policies outlined in Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act (FAA) "does not apply to any US person", it looks like the government is sending out some mixed messages. How Insufficient Sleep Makes You Fat, Stupid, And Dead | Fast ...

Need a reason to #unplug? How about four: Exxon Valdex, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, Challenger. As we continue to look into these man-made disasters, we discover they're increasingly linked to insufficient sleep.

But sleepiness causes more everyday calamities, too.

As Jane E. Brody reports for the New York Times, more and more research shows how our sleeping habits affect just about every phase of our lives--be it your life expectancy, your decision making, or your ability to learn. In other words, if your attitude is that you'll sleep when you're dead, you'll soon be dead.

Without that time to consolidate your experiences at night, you won't retain what happened during the day.

Much of the article focuses on ways that sleep deprivation affects your health--like how it mucks up all your organs and how the corresponding loss in metabolism could make you put on 10 pounds in a year--but we, as productivity nerds, are most interested in what it does to our working lives.

For you to be able to access a memory, that memory first has to be encoded into your brain (and you have to have been paying attention when it happened). Without that time to consolidate your experiences at night, you won't retain what happened during the day. This is an advertisement for mindfulness--and for getting enough rest.

"During sleep, new learning and memory pathways become encoded in the brain, and adequate sleep is necessary for those pathways to work optimally," Brody writes. "People who are well rested are better able to learn a task and more likely to remember what they learned."

But if you don't get enough, you send your self-awareness into a productivity-crippling stupor. Dr. Timothy Roehrs did an interesting experiment to measure just how much, as the American Psychological Association reports:

Dr. Roehrs and his colleagues paid sleepy and fully alert subjects to complete a series of computer tasks. At random times, they were given a choice to take their money and stop. Or they could forge ahead with the potential of either earning more money or losing it all if their work was not completed within an unknown remainder of time.

Dr. Roehrs found that the alert people were very sensitive to the amount of work they needed to do to finish the tasks and understood the risk of losing their money if they didn't. But the sleepy subjects chose to quit the tasks prematurely or they risked losing everything by trying to finish the task for more money even when it was 100 percent likely that they would be unable to finish, said Dr. Roehrs.

The takeaway: The sleepier you are, the less you realize how much your performance is sagging. Which can have, as we noted above, disastrous results.

Sleepy driving is as bad as drunk driving. And as Brody reports, "no amount of caffeine or cold air can negate the ill effects."

But what if you're behind your desk rather than the wheel of your car? Chances are you might cheat the people you work with.

While we can have a general feeling that we're sleeping-walking through the day--20% of American adults report performance-interrupting sleepiness multiple times a week--having a clearer picture of the symptoms can help us nip somnambulance in the bud (or the bed, that is).

David F. Dinges, Ph.D., of the Division of Sleep and Chronobiology and Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, describes the symtoms of sleep deprivation as coming in :

  1. Irritability, moodiness, and disinhibition
  2. Apathy, slowed speech, and flattened emotional responses, impaired memory and an inability to be novel or multitask

So if we find ourselves with a few of these symptoms, what ever shall we do? Train in the subtle arts of getting to bed the right way.

We're live from the 2013 Paris Air Show!

We're live from the 2013 Paris Air Show!

While you were sleeping earlier today, we were getting trampled by crazed commuters at a train station, overheated in a steamy bus that inched through traffic at one mile per hour, and soaked by heavy rains and an overflowing airport sewage system. But all in all, it was a pretty fantastic day. That's due in no small part to the dozens of incredible aircraft we had a chance to get up close and personal with, the fighter jets demonstrating slow flight and vertical climbs a few hundred feet above the ground, and the A350 cockpit we stumbled upon in the Airbus booth.

Yes, we're here at the 2013 Paris Air Show -- France's gigantic biennial aviation fest. It's more or less like any other trade show we've visited in the past few weeks, just instead of tablet accessories, we're digging through aircraft components, and the Airbus A350 is this expo's Zenbook Infinity. There's been no shortage of press on TV and all over the web today, so you're probably familiar with the show's theme: Airbus versus Boeing. Sure, that's more or less been the case every time Le Bourget Airport has opened its doors to the aviation community, but with the Dreamliner's recent dilemma and the A350's budding ascendance, the competition this year is furious. But we'll leave the industry analysis to aviation publications -- we're here for the gear. And some pretty ambitious flight demos. You can catch more of today's action in our video after the break.

Utah businessman known for good deeds accused of Internet fraud

Jeremy Johnson at U.S. district court in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Wednesday. (Rick Bowmer/AP)

A Utah businessman known locally for his good deeds is being accused of masterminding a massive Internet fraud.

According to a recent profile in The New York Times, heroic acts like rescuing lost hikers and piloting his own helicopter to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Haiti may have been funded on the backs of defrauded customers from his business.

The Federal Trade Commission has accused Jeremy Johnson of ?one of the largest and most intricate online marketing frauds ever perpetrated in the United States,? according to the Times.

The Times reports that the now-defunct company, I Works, promised to help members apply for government grants. The company allegedly lured in customers with the promise of easy money and risk-free guarantees, and it then would continue to charge the credit cards of ?unwitting consumers? for pricey monthly subscription fees.

Through this scheme, charges the FTC, Johnson amassed a fortune of $275 million. While the system of ongoing fees is not necessarily illegal, the government has charged that Johnson?s company failed to disclose the monthly fees or give customers a window of time to opt out of the subscription services.

For his part, the 6-foot-tall, red-haired Johnson vigorously disputes the accusations.

"They are absolutely not true," Johnson said of the allegations to the Salt Lake Tribune in 2010. "I never charged any consumer for anything without their consent."

Meanwhile, according to the Times, the rolling fees helped fund a lavish lifestyle ?of helicopters and houseboats, classic cars and poker at a Las Vegas casino."

The company first came under scrutiny after hundreds of thousands of customers began to seek credit for unauthorized charges. Visa and MasterCard ended many of the company?s accounts and fined I Works.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the company allegedly had to set up 80 ?shell accounts? to accept payments without being detected.

"They had no employees, they had no office locations, they were mail drops," Collot Guerard, the lead FTC attorney on the lawsuit, told the Tribune. "They were essentially fronts, and they didn't have any substance to them other than lending their name to obtain a new merchant account when Jeremy Johnson and I Works were no longer able to get merchant accounts."

This Is Where Manhattan's Payphones Go to Die

This Is Where Manhattan's Payphones Go to Die

Payphones may be essential to pop culture, Supermen, and Matrix-escapees everywhere, but try to remember the last time you actually saw someone using a payphone for its intended purpose. What about the last time you just saw one... anywhere?

Physical payphones are becoming increasingly elusive as mobile technology pushes them towards obsolescence. Which leads to the next logical question?where does old tech go to die? The answer, as photographer Dave Bledsoe found out, is the same place society's outcasts have sought refuge for years: underneath the highway.

This Is Where Manhattan's Payphones Go to Die

Way up in Upper Manhattan, where the West Side Highway meets 12th Avenue, Bledsoe accidentally stumbled upon this eerie burial ground for the tech of decades past. But at least they have their friends to keep them company, because according to Bledsoe "at least one hundred old, battered pay phones were locked behind a fence near the Park's Department building."

This Is Where Manhattan's Payphones Go to Die

This Is Where Manhattan's Payphones Go to Die

And even though the payphones themselves may have lost their usefulness, that still leaves the problem of the multitude of hookups forever scattered across the country. New York is currently attempting to tackle that issue by making use of the still functional connections, challenging people to submit their best ideas?everything from weather sensors to smart kiosks to wind machines has been proposed.

The entire photo set, which you can find on Bledsoe's Flickr account, acts as a haunting reminder of what can happen to even one of the most iconic societal mainstays while we're not looking?sad, but still incredibly beautiful. And we wish them the happiest of retirements. [Flickr via Gothamist]

Advanced Micro Devices may bounce back with new servers: Barron's

(Reuters) - Prospects are looking better for Advanced Micro Devices Inc, the No. 2 maker of microprocessors for personal computers whose revenue fell sharply last year, as computer servers acquired last year in its purchase of tiny startup company SeaMicro bolster results, Barron's said.

"SeaMicro offers AMD a chance to take share in the mainstream server-computer market, in which Intel sells about 96 percent of the chips," Barron's said, citing industry data. "SeaMicro's technology looks good; its management team, astute; and the market opportunity, promising."

Barron's said Dan Niles, an investor with AlphaOne Capital Partners, believes AMD shares could double to over $8 by 2015 if company revenue grows to $7 billion and other sales measurements improve.

Company revenue fell 17 percent last year to $5.4 billion, following gains in 2010 and 2011, Barron's said. Recent results were hurt by weakening sales of personal computers and strong demand for Intel's Xeon line of server chips, the newspaper said.

Latest leak suggests Nokia EOS to pack 41MP camera, possible metallic variant also spotted

Latest leak suggest Nokia EOS PureView to pack 41MP camera, possible variant also spotted

We gotta say, originally we weren't very confident in the above alleged spy shots of the rumored Nokia EOS smartphone, but after talking to the leakster from Sina Weibo, we think we got this figured out. First of all, there are two parts here: the paint-less camera cover plate that now says "41 MEGA PIXEL" -- the same camera resolution featured on the 808 PureView -- instead of "XX MEGA PIXEL," and a metallic chassis of the EOS phone. But the latter (pictured center and right) looks slightly different to the other leaks we've come across so far: the bump is significantly smaller, and the holes inside don't match the ones on the cover plate. If you look even closer, the pin hole for what seems to be a SIM slot at the top is now on the other side of the slot.

Judging by his background and track record so far (he claims he also leaked the red EOS factory photos), we have reason to believe that this leakster does have a good source on the factory floor. Hence our two assumptions: either this chassis is an early engineering sample, or that this is a metallic variant of the plastic EOS. You know, like what the Lumia 925 is to the Lumia 920. We've been promised a few more photos in the coming days, and hopefully they'll unravel more mystery before Nokia lets the cat out of the bag next month.
