Utah businessman known for good deeds accused of Internet fraud

A Utah businessman known locally for his good deeds is being accused of masterminding a massive Internet fraud.

According to a recent profile in The New York Times, heroic acts like rescuing lost hikers and piloting his own helicopter to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Haiti may have been funded on the backs of defrauded customers from his business.

The Federal Trade Commission has accused Jeremy Johnson of ?one of the largest and most intricate online marketing frauds ever perpetrated in the United States,? according to the Times.

The Times reports that the now-defunct company, I Works, promised to help members apply for government grants. The company allegedly lured in customers with the promise of easy money and risk-free guarantees, and it then would continue to charge the credit cards of ?unwitting consumers? for pricey monthly subscription fees.

Through this scheme, charges the FTC, Johnson amassed a fortune of $275 million. While the system of ongoing fees is not necessarily illegal, the government has charged that Johnson?s company failed to disclose the monthly fees or give customers a window of time to opt out of the subscription services.

For his part, the 6-foot-tall, red-haired Johnson vigorously disputes the accusations.

"They are absolutely not true," Johnson said of the allegations to the Salt Lake Tribune in 2010. "I never charged any consumer for anything without their consent."

Meanwhile, according to the Times, the rolling fees helped fund a lavish lifestyle ?of helicopters and houseboats, classic cars and poker at a Las Vegas casino."

The company first came under scrutiny after hundreds of thousands of customers began to seek credit for unauthorized charges. Visa and MasterCard ended many of the company?s accounts and fined I Works.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the company allegedly had to set up 80 ?shell accounts? to accept payments without being detected.

"They had no employees, they had no office locations, they were mail drops," Collot Guerard, the lead FTC attorney on the lawsuit, told the Tribune. "They were essentially fronts, and they didn't have any substance to them other than lending their name to obtain a new merchant account when Jeremy Johnson and I Works were no longer able to get merchant accounts."

This Is Where Manhattan's Payphones Go to Die

Payphones may be essential to pop culture, Supermen, and Matrix-escapees everywhere, but try to remember the last time you actually saw someone using a payphone for its intended purpose. What about the last time you just saw one... anywhere?

Physical payphones are becoming increasingly elusive as mobile technology pushes them towards obsolescence. Which leads to the next logical question?where does old tech go to die? The answer, as photographer Dave Bledsoe found out, is the same place society's outcasts have sought refuge for years: underneath the highway.

Way up in Upper Manhattan, where the West Side Highway meets 12th Avenue, Bledsoe accidentally stumbled upon this eerie burial ground for the tech of decades past. But at least they have their friends to keep them company, because according to Bledsoe "at least one hundred old, battered pay phones were locked behind a fence near the Park's Department building."

And even though the payphones themselves may have lost their usefulness, that still leaves the problem of the multitude of hookups forever scattered across the country. New York is currently attempting to tackle that issue by making use of the still functional connections, challenging people to submit their best ideas?everything from weather sensors to smart kiosks to wind machines has been proposed.

The entire photo set, which you can find on Bledsoe's Flickr account, acts as a haunting reminder of what can happen to even one of the most iconic societal mainstays while we're not looking?sad, but still incredibly beautiful. And we wish them the happiest of retirements. [Flickr via Gothamist]

Advanced Micro Devices may bounce back with new servers: Barron's

(Reuters) - Prospects are looking better for Advanced Micro Devices Inc, the No. 2 maker of microprocessors for personal computers whose revenue fell sharply last year, as computer servers acquired last year in its purchase of tiny startup company SeaMicro bolster results, Barron's said.

"SeaMicro offers AMD a chance to take share in the mainstream server-computer market, in which Intel sells about 96 percent of the chips," Barron's said, citing industry data. "SeaMicro's technology looks good; its management team, astute; and the market opportunity, promising."

Barron's said Dan Niles, an investor with AlphaOne Capital Partners, believes AMD shares could double to over $8 by 2015 if company revenue grows to $7 billion and other sales measurements improve.

Company revenue fell 17 percent last year to $5.4 billion, following gains in 2010 and 2011, Barron's said. Recent results were hurt by weakening sales of personal computers and strong demand for Intel's Xeon line of server chips, the newspaper said.

Latest leak suggests Nokia EOS to pack 41MP camera, possible metallic variant also spotted

We gotta say, originally we weren't very confident in the above alleged spy shots of the rumored Nokia EOS smartphone, but after talking to the leakster from Sina Weibo, we think we got this figured out. First of all, there are two parts here: the paint-less camera cover plate that now says "41 MEGA PIXEL" -- the same camera resolution featured on the 808 PureView -- instead of "XX MEGA PIXEL," and a metallic chassis of the EOS phone. But the latter (pictured center and right) looks slightly different to the other leaks we've come across so far: the bump is significantly smaller, and the holes inside don't match the ones on the cover plate. If you look even closer, the pin hole for what seems to be a SIM slot at the top is now on the other side of the slot.

Judging by his background and track record so far (he claims he also leaked the red EOS factory photos), we have reason to believe that this leakster does have a good source on the factory floor. Hence our two assumptions: either this chassis is an early engineering sample, or that this is a metallic variant of the plastic EOS. You know, like what the Lumia 925 is to the Lumia 920. We've been promised a few more photos in the coming days, and hopefully they'll unravel more mystery before Nokia lets the cat out of the bag next month.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly's death is being investigated as a possible drug overdose, Cpl. Kay Lester, a spokeswoman for Atlanta's Fulton County police, told NBCNews.com.

Information obtained from family members and others at the scene helped lead the investigation in that direction, but more information won't be known until toxicology results are back from Kelly's autopsy, Lester said.

That autopsy, completed Thursday morning in Atlanta, showed no signs of foul play or trauma, the Fulton County medical examiner's office told NBCNews.com. Toxicology results will be available in approximately three weeks, a spokeswoman said.

Kelly, 34, was discovered unresponsive in his Atlanta home Wednesday and pronounced dead early that evening. Kelly and childhood friend Chris Smith traveled the world as 1990s rap group Kris Kross when they were just 13, and their hit song "Jump" was certified double platinum.

On Thursday, both Chris Smith and Kelly's family issued statements mourning Kelly.

"His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him," said the statement from Kelly's mother,?Donna Kelly Pratte, and his record label So So Def.

In his statement, Kelly's musical partner Smith said, "Our friendship began as little boys in first grade. We grew up together. It was a blessing to achieve the success, travel the world and entertain Kris Kross fans all around the world with my best friend."

Testimony: Family tried intervention for Jackson

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michael Jackson's mother sat in court Thursday as a police detective testified that she told him the family had tried drug interventions for the singer, believing he was addicted to painkillers.

But Detective Orlando Martinez said Katherine Jackson told him her son refused any help, saying he didn't have a drug problem.

The testimony came under questioning by lawyers for concert promoter AEG Live LLC, which is being sued by Katherine Jackson for negligence in the star's death.

Martinez, who took the lead investigating Michael Jackson's June 25, 2009, death, said he first interviewed his mother at the hospital. But six months later, he decided to go back to her and check out "some things regarding family meetings about addiction." He said it was then that she told him about several attempts by the family to hold interventions and get Jackson into rehab.

"Mrs. Jackson said the family tried to help him but he would have nothing to do with it," Martinez said. "She had asked Michael if he was taking any drugs, and he denied it."

Martinez said Katherine Jackson told him she believed her son was taking medicine for back pain and might have become addicted.

"What did Mrs. Jackson tell you?" asked AEG attorney Marvin Putnam.

"The family attempted several interventions," said the witness. "She had talked to her son about drugs herself."

She said the efforts produced no results, Martinez said, because "he denied having a problem."

Katherine Jackson also told the detective the first time she ever met Dr. Conrad Murray was at the hospital the day her son died. Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after giving the anesthetic propofol to the pop star. Bottles containing pain killers also were found in the singer's bedroom.

Martinez said he also interviewed Jackson's son Prince at the hospital. But his handwritten notes of that interview were not allowed in evidence because the interview was not recorded.

Earlier, Martinez said that five days before Jackson died, his manager called the singer's doctor, told him Jackson was sick, and implored him to have blood tests done, according to a voicemail played in court.

The message left by Frank Dileo was retrieved by police from Murray's cellphone.

"I'm sure you're aware he had an episode last night," the message said. "He's sick. ... We gotta see what he's doing."

Plaintiff's lawyer Brian Panish acknowledged outside court that the episode occurred on the day Jackson was told by Kenny Ortega, the director of his "This is It" concert, to go home from a rehearsal because he was pale and shivering.

Panish suggested that if Dileo was aware of the incident, so were AEG executives. Jurors were not given any further details on the episode.

Katherine Jackson's lawsuit claims AEG didn't properly investigate Murray.

AEG denies it hired the doctor, and it is likely to blame Jackson for insisting on having Murray as his doctor because of his dependence on propofol, which Jackson used to sleep. The company alleges Jackson was addicted to numerous drugs.
