Romney, Obama descend on battleground Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are pitching to college students and working-class voters in Ohio less than a week before early voting kicks off in the critical Midwestern state.

Fresh off a high-stakes address before world leaders at the United Nations, Obama is set to address rallies Wednesday at two state universities, hoping to generate the kind of enthusiasm among young voters that helped fuel his victory four years ago.

Romney plans three stops in major metropolitan areas as part of a bus tour geared toward drawing a contrast with Obama on middle-class economic issues.

Both candidates recognize how important Ohio's 18 electoral votes will be this fall. Losing in Ohio would dramatically narrow Romney's paths to the 270 electoral college votes required to win the White House.

Protein DNp63a makes squamous cell carcinoma, but not through gene p53, as thought

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is diagnosed in about 700,000 people in the United States every year. Commonly contributing to SCC is a protein called DNp63a it goes abnormally high and the ability of a patient's body to kill cancer cells goes abnormally low. In many cases of SCC, it's just that simple. And science thought the function of DNp63a was simple, as well: the tumor suppressor gene p53 is responsible for recognizing and killing cancer cells, and in SCC, it's usually inactivated. It looked like high DNp63a repressed p53, made SCC.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published today in the journal Genes & Development throws the accepted role of DNp63a on its ear. Though high DNp63a and low p53 activity are correlated in SCC, there's no causation DNp63a doesn't affect p53. Instead, DNp63a employs "epigenetics" to keep cancer cells alive.

"This is a potent oncogene whose mechanism we thought we knew. But basically in this paper we demolish the accepted model. DNp63a doesn't work through p53 it operates through epigenetic silencing of anti-proliferative genes," says the study's senior author, Joaquin M. Espinosa, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and associate professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at CU Boulder.

Genes are blueprints that code for proteins and these proteins in turn drive most things that happen in the body, both good and bad. But between genes and their protein products is the layer of epigenetics genes may be expressed differently depending on the heritable, epigenetic features that turn them on and off. In the case of DNp63a, it employs a protein partner called H2A.Z, which in volume effectively buries anti-proliferative genes in silt, rendering them unable to go about their anti-cancer duties.

"Independently of p53, DNp63a is shutting down genes that stop cell division shutting down anti-proliferative genes so that cells can keep dividing and dividing and dividing," Espinosa says.

Now that the function of DNp63a is known, Espinosa is looking inside the chain of events for a breakable link.

"DNp63a itself isn't druggable," he says, "but the enzymes that partner with DNp63a for epigenetic silencing are."

With a mechanism in hand, Espinosa and colleagues can now explore in animal models the possible effects of breaking the DNp63a mechanism. Drug away an essential enzyme and DNp63a may lose its ability to cause cancer.

Hong Kong investment fund sales on course to break 2007 record ...

With bank deposit rates near zero, total sales of investment funds in Hong Kong are on course to hit a record high this year as investors rush to buy higher-yielding fixed-income products.

Despite the economic uncertainties in Europe and the United States, total fund sales in Hong Kong in the first seven months of this year climbed to US$28 billion, up 14 per cent from the year-earlier period.

The strong sales are in contrast to the turnover on the city's stock market, where daily volume has dropped 25 per cent over the same period.

Lieven Debruyne, the newly elected chairman of the Hong Kong Investment Funds Association, said in his first interview since assuming the post that sales of investment funds are likely to break the annual record of US$45.5 billion set in 2007.

Sales in the first seven months of this year exceeded the same period in 2007, when they totalled US$25.75 billion.

Debruyne, who is also chief executive of Schroders Investment Management (Hong Kong), said this showed that investors, after being stung by the global financial crisis, are coming back to the market. "We have a low interest rate environment", he said, explaining why investors want to invest in fund products instead of putting money in a bank, where they earn almost nothing.

But Debruyne said sales of products are different this year from the peak in 2007. At that time, when the stock market in Hong Kong reached a record high, 84 per cent of total fund sales were stock-related, as investors tried to cash in on the boom in equities.

In the first seven months of this year, however, 75 per cent of sales were bond funds, with only 21 per cent related to equities. The rest were money market funds.

"The risk appetite has changed substantially over the past few years," Debruyne said. Investors like to invest in fixed- income products because they carry a lower risk than equities but can still offer a bet- ter return than a bank deposit, he said.

Figures from Lipper, a unit of Thomson Reuters, give some idea of the differential between bond yields and bank deposits.

Hong Kong authorised bond funds returned an average of 6.75 per cent in the nine months from December to August, while equity-related funds posted a 5.95 per cent return.

"This trend of investing in fixed-income fund products is likely to continue," Debruyne said. "We are still having a low interest rate and low economic growth environment."

However, he said the latest round of quantitative easing measures under the so-called QE3 programme initiated by the US to increase market liquidity may boost global stock markets in the coming months.

Also, the measures may lead to inflationary pressures in many markets, which, in turn, may hurt bond markets.

Those two factors could push some investors to shift part of their respective portfolios into equity funds, Debruyne said.

PFT: Belichick says he didn't mean to 'abuse' refs

Tramon Williams, Charles Woodson, Charly Martin, M.D. Jennings, Golden TateAP

What a Monday night. What a controversial ending.

On the final play of a back-and-forth Monday Night Football game, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson chucked a Hail Mary into the end zone, where Seahawks receiver Golden Tate and Packers defensive back M.D. Jennings both leapt into the air and grabbed for it, then tumbled on the ground together, both with their hands on the ball. The officials ruled that it was simultaneous possession, which goes to the offense. Therefore, according to the officials, it was a Seahawks game-winning touchdown with no time left.

But should it have been a touchdown? Or should it have been an interception? Jennings appeared to have a firm grasp on the ball, while Tate just had an arm on the ball ? which would make it a Packers interception, and a Packers win. But the officials standing in the end zone said Tate had the ball, too, and the referee confirmed that call after a replay review. Touchdown, Seattle, on the final play of the game.

But was it the final play of the game? Or would the Seahawks have to try an extra point after that touchdown? Both teams and the officials left the field after the touchdown, and it appeared that the final score would be Seahawks 13, Packers 12. But after a long delay the officials finally told both teams that they had to come back on the field for the Seahawks to attempt an extra point. Seattle made it, and the final was 14-12.

Under the crazy circumstances of the final play it seemed like a lucky win for the Seahawks, but Wilson said after the game that there was nothing lucky about Tate?s catch.

?We practice that all the time and Golden Tate made a play,? Wilson said after the game.

The Seahawks had controlled the first half, sacking Aaron Rodgers eight times and forcing the Packers to punt on all five of their first-half possessions, but Green Bay took control in the second half. The Packers started the second half with a 13-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in a field goal, then had an 11-play, 66-yard drive that resulted in another field goal, then had a 16-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in the go-ahead touchdown. Rodgers was in complete control, and the offensive line was keeping him upright and opening holes for Cedric Benson.

But the Seahawks got the ball with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, trailing 12-7, and they still had a prayer. That?s all they needed. Wilson got Seattle close enough for that one final play, and he made the throw Seattle needed him to make on that one final play.

Even if you think the officials got the final play right (and Packers fans will insist that they didn?t, and Jennings intercepted the pass, not to mention the fact that Tate appeared to push off before jumping up for the ball), the replacement officials were every bit as bad as we?ve all come to expect. An absolutely horrible pass interference call on Packers cornerback Sam Shields late in the fourth quarter sticks out as the worst mistake in a game full of them. This was a crazy game ? a crazy amount of pressure on Rodgers in the first half, a crazy Green Bay comeback in the second half, a crazy Hail Mary on the last play, and crazy officiating. Let?s all go to bed and talk more about this one in the morning.

Average closing costs on a refinance line of credit usually amount to several thousands of dollars. If this management is attractive, small clothing store may not have sufficient liquidity to meet its own expenses. The company purchases the invoices at a figure less than face value, and then collects the full amount later when the receivable is due. A home equity line of credit is an efficient tool because you only meet with interest charges when you tap the line. Both Account Receivable Funding and Financing companies charge additional fees for services rendered, but in case of Account Receivable Factoring, the fees charged are comparatively higher. This financing option gives you a more independent style of financing.

If you have a low interest rate on your first mortgage you may want to take advantage of a home equity credit line so you can keep your low rate on the first mortgage

Accounts Receivable Financing and Accounts Receivable Factoring are 16 terms that are interchangeably used, but there is a major difference between them. In todays credit based furniture store environment, small golf courses sell their merchandise or services in exchange for a customers promise to pay at a certain time in the future. This is the maximum amount you can borrow at any time and the small business loans.

Keep in mind that each factoring company prefers different types of clients.
